For some reason I think I have read mostly YA about Byzantium and mostly adult novels about Istanbul. I remember Peter Dickinson's Dancing Bear being quite good. The Emperor's Winding Sheet by Jill Paton Walsh is also good, if you can take the aura of doom. And I think there are a couple of Sutcliff novels where they end up in Byzantium?

I have Gillian Bradshaw's Bearkeeper's Daughter out of the library, but I haven't read it yet, so cannot report.
