I don't remember seeing cloves in medieval Islamic recipes, though I haven't done a concerted search. I guess camphor is used in modern Indian cooking; I should keep an eye out next time I'm in the Indian grocery store.

Also, I had no idea that camphor was used in the production of smokeless gunpowder. Thank you for inspiring me to look up its uses!
