Finished re-reading Lord of the Rings. Some comments:

  • Hobbits have funny accents. It says so at least twice at the beginning of Return of the King.
  • Why Peregrine Took had to marry a girl named Diamond I do not know; but I suppose since his father's name was Paladin he could be expected to like silly names.
  • I quite like Rose Cotton.
  • Frodo, Bilbo, and to a certain extent Sam are the implied sources for the story; we're supposed to see all of the Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit for that matter) as a sort of translation or retelling of the relevant sections of the book Bilbo hands down to Frodo, and Frodo to Sam. I wonder if there are points in the story that are particularly skewed by the hobbit viewpoint? Just how much is the supposedly omniscient narrator reworking events to suit hobbitish tastes? For example, does Helm's Deep happen the way Legolas and Gimli told Frodo it happened?
