I'm also in the cautious hand camp but I remember the manual mentioned pushing it with like... the handle of a wooden spoon. (a chopstick would probably also do)

At least on mine there's a little round metal thing by the valve that pops up when it's pressurized, so that does offer some visual indication about whether you'll be able to move the lid.
