Age of Sail alert: I'm cataloguing a book for work called Beyond the learned academy—the practice of mathematics, 1600–1850, and it has multiple chapters about what sorts of mathematics members of the navy were supposed to know to pass their exams.

Cool! I'll look into it.

In college I wrote a term paper for a class on history of the book where I compared two books in the rare books library that were editions of Euclid's Elements from about 1700. One of them was translated/edited by a mathematical practictioner, Reeve Williams (working from Claude Deschales' French translation), who taught at the Virginia Coffee-House, and was dedicated to Samuel Pepys, Secretary of the Navy.
