The Order of the Laurel is the SCA's peerage order for skill in the arts and sciences. This more or less boils down to "aelfgyfu is being recognized for her impressive artistry and her efforts in teaching and general chivalric qualities, and will thereafter be responsible for finding and nurturing these good qualities in others." (The other peerage orders are for service to the Society, and skill in heavy fighting.) There will probably be an actual vigil (that is, an opportunity to stay up late, with food, and people coming by to give advice about what it means to be a peer) shortly before the elevation ceremony.
