the general public

[livejournal.com profile] gwacie said, "Here's a topic for you: How does the general public perceive the SCA?"

I think that this is best covered by the geek hierarchy, with the caveat that members of the general public are unlikely to recognize or distinguish between lower levels of the hierarchy.

I thought about extending this entry with a snippet in which Kirk is, like, an ocelot or something fighting in Crown Tourney, but [livejournal.com profile] glasseye would disown me.

Judging by this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyhhFzE5O5U) he wouldn't last long anyway.

Is it very sad that I fall somewhere in the middle of this hierarchy. (I actually fit into a category that is a half step below the SCA one.) I laughed at the stuff on the bottom.

I would have loved the picture of Kirk the Ocelot fighting in Crown.=)

That is a level to which I have not yet sunk. But I can understand where it might get fun. I may write fan fic but I don't do that. *grin*

Okay, more prodding ;)

I was phrasing the question to go along with a discussion we've been having lately about how to attract new members to the SCA. It occurs to me that the general image of the SCA might put people off who otherwise would enjoy it. (Or do we not want to attract the non geekish?)

Top of the hierarchy! woooo! woooo! I'm queen of the... geeks... wait. Is that a good thing?

hee hee. Sorry. But Maureen McHugh herself showed me this hierarchy a few years ago with a gleeful, "Look! I'm at the top of something!"
:)

I've actually read that story.
It was Sonic the Hedgehog/Star Trek crossover fan fiction.
Although, actually, I don't know if there was any self-insertion in it...
