art for people who hate video?

Does anyone have a good digital art tutorial in static form (essays, pictures, books, links)? I can tell that I'm still treating digital painting as if it were literally painting. This has its own charm sometimes! But I'd like to be able to make more polished pieces, too.

I have to leave for fencing class soon but I will get you a list of books, and [personal profile] telophase might have some links if you ask her as she's been one of my main mentors in the whole endeavor.

What app(s) are you using? Most resources tend to be Photoshop-specific, but there are certainly techniques you can generalize.

I used to use GIMP (badly, in the art sense), but most of the Photoshop tutorials are translatable into it. There's less stuff for Autodesk although I've used that in the past (on desktop, not Android). Anyway, I too loathe videos so I'm in a similar boat. I have a bunch of books on my shelves and I'll get you the list after fencing!

books on digital painting

Beginner's Guide to Digital Painting in Photoshop Elements by 3dtotal. So parts of this will be too basic for you (you already know what composition is :p). But where this book really shines is when it gets to specific tutorials on specific things, e.g. painting trees, lava, mountains, moonlight, etc. etc.

ImagineFX's Fantasy Workshop: Mastering Digital Painting Techniques. This is more oriented toward tutorials relevant to portraits, with a side of other topics like creature design or orcs or whatever.

Susan Ruddick Bloom's Digital Collage and Painting. This focuses on Photoshop/Painter techniques for fine art. I haven't looked through this much, but [personal profile] telophase speaks highly of it.

(more later, have to eat dinner)

Some more, and sorry I keep skipping out on you, I've been distracted all evening--

Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy: Digital Painting - this one is really best for things like painting wall textures or rust, although it also has some fundamental stuff on how to approach digital painting, and was another rec from [personal profile] telophase

Bold Visions: The Digital Painting Bible by Gary Tonge is more oriented toward landscapes of the sci-fi/fantasy variety, but if you want to paint environments there's some interesting stuff here.

D'Artiste Digital Painting 2, Character Design, Fashion Design--all of these have walkthroughs for various pieces by different artists. I picked up Digital Painting 2 for the Mélanie Delon walkthrough because I like her fantasy women portraits, but you could probably have a wander through others in the D'Artiste series.

I think this is all I have on hand. I hope something in here is useful to you!

Olena works for the Quanta Magazine and she gave this talk (https://icerm.brown.edu/video_archive/?play=2061) at ICERM a few months back. Midway through there are a lot of good suggestions that might help.

But since you specifically asked for NOT videos, take a look at this link (https://www.one-tab.com/page/jAgbl51URQ-EuRk2IjCm2w) for some tools and guides.
