I have an account at Ravelry now, with the same username. Be my friend, if you're over there!
(I do think Ravelry would be most useful for someone making small tweaks to published patterns, or trying to publish knitting patterns herself-- the networking breaks down when all of one's projects were invented from a memorized form and a bit of arithmetic.)

Ravelry lets you search by pattern and yarn, so if you were planning a project you could see every other interpretation and decide what worked. And there seem to be some solid historical-knitting geeks. Right now it's only integrated with Flickr for photos, which is fine by me but might be less useful if one wasn't already posting knitting to Flickr. Also, I haven't yet figured out how to make Ravelry e-mail me when interesting things happen.

I've realized that, if nothing else, ravelry has kept me motivated to finish projects and to plan out new ones. I also like searching patterns to see what other yarns people have used, and vice versa (what others have done with a particular yarn I like).
And my needles are far more organized now since I've printed out an inventory card and carry it with me! I didn't realize I had that many #8s...?
