(I do think Ravelry would be most useful for someone making small tweaks to published patterns, or trying to publish knitting patterns herself-- the networking breaks down when all of one's projects were invented from a memorized form and a bit of arithmetic.)

Well, do you want to belong to a knitting-oriented social networking site?

Ravelry lets you search by pattern and yarn, so if you were planning a project you could see every other interpretation and decide what worked. And there seem to be some solid historical-knitting geeks. Right now it's only integrated with Flickr for photos, which is fine by me but might be less useful if one wasn't already posting knitting to Flickr. Also, I haven't yet figured out how to make Ravelry e-mail me when interesting things happen.

And you don't have to request an invitation from anyone else, just go the page and sign up, and they'll send you one in a few days/weeks. (It took around 6 weeks for me, but they've sped it up, I hear.) Apparently they're still in beta testing.
