This pattern makes a pair of fingerless gloves in size small.

Yarn: Madeleine Tosh Twist Light in Blood Runs Cold (red) and Brass (yellow), and Malabrigo sock yarn in black.

Needles: four size 2 double-pointed needles (I used bamboo).

Gauge: 1 pattern repeat (12 stitches) was 1.5 inches wide in red and black on size 2 needles. The same pattern in red and yellow was closer to 2 inches.

cuff

Cast on 40 stitches using a two-color brioche cast-on, starting with red. Divide on three needles: I placed 12 stitches on each of the first 2 needles, and 16 stitches on the last needle. Knit in the round in two-color brioche rib for 1/2 an inch, placing a marker 4 stitches before the end of the round. Work two repeats of the Ring of Fire pattern on the first 36 stitches, keeping the last 4 stitches in plain two-color brioche rib.

thumb increase

Change from yellow to black yarn. Work the Ring of Fire pattern on the first 36 stitches. On the last red stitch of the round (for the left glove) or the first red stitch after the marker (for the right glove) increase 2 stitches as brkyobrk. Continue in pattern, increasing on the last red stitch or first red stitch after the marker on every odd red row for one pattern repeat.

On the next round, knit 38 stitches in the established pattern (for the left glove) or 36 stitches (for the right glove), slip the next 14 stitches to holders for the thumb, and cast on 2 stitches.

hand

Continue working the Ring of Fire pattern on the first 36 stitches and two-color brioche rib on the last 4 stitches until you have completed 1.5 repeats of the pattern above the thumb. Break the red yarn. Work K1, P1 rib in black for one round. Continue the K1, P1 rib for 25 stitches.

fingers and thumb

Place 15 stitches from the beginning of the round and 15 stitches from the end of the round on holders. (Putting 5 stitches on a safety pin works well.) You are now ready to knit the little finger. Cast on 4 stitches; you should have 14 active stitches. Knit in the round on K1, P1 rib for about an inch. Bind off loosely.

For the ring finger, take 5 stitches from your holder for the back of the hand, pick up 4 stitches from the side of the little finger, take 5 stitches from the holder for the front of the hand, and cast on 4 stitches, for a total of 18 stitches. Knit in the round on K1, P1 rib for about an inch. Bind off loosely.

The middle finger is similar to the ring finger: take 5 stitches from your holder for the back of the hand, pick up 4 stitches from the side of the ring finger, take 5 stitches from the holder for the front of the hand, and cast on 4 stitches, for a total of 18 stitches. Knit in the round on K1, P1 rib for about an inch. Bind off loosely.

For the pointer finger, take 5 stitches from your holder for the back of the hand, pick up 6 stitches from the side of the middle finger, take 5 stitches from the holder for the front of the hand, and pick up 2 stitches from the side of the glove, for a total of 18 stitches. Knit in the round in K1, P1 rib for about an inch. Bind off loosely.

Finally, return the 14 stitches from the thumb holders to your needles, and pick up 6 stitches from the side of the glove for a total of 20 stitches. Work in the round in K1, P1 rib for about an inch. Bind off loosely.
