I wrote a column about number theory, particle physics, and the geometry of doughnuts!

(This one does assume some calculus, but there's a compensatory Jorts cartoon.)

Thanks for including a link to the photo of the coffee cup-donut transformation in the article, since I first was confused as to how a topologist could confuse them, since the donut's hole goes through, and the coffee cup's hole has a bottom, the better for holding in the coffee. It didn't occur to be that it was the cup handle that was causing the confusion, since that ring is such a tiny one compared to the body of the cup.

I made no attempt to understand the math, but the text between the equations was nonetheless interesting to read.
