How was Nine Layers? It's somewhere in the to-read stack. I enjoyed Poison Master quite a lot, Ghost Sister in patches, and her second novel (forgetting the title) only a little.

Nine Layers is the only book of hers I've read. I definitely enjoyed it, and am planning to look for her other stuff; I'd class it in the 'enjoyable pulp' category rather than the 'art' category, but it was definitely fun. There are shades of Highlander-- the hero is a Hero who's been alive since the twelfth century and carries a sword in a fishing rod case, which strikes me as an improvement over the trench coat. The detail about Uzbekistan and its neighbors was interesting. In particular, the constant consumption of shashlik made me slightly nostalgic (I spent the summer at my parents' house, where my sister and her husband are living; my brother-in-law is Iranian and spent some time in Turkey, and one of my mother's summer projects was making shashlik (kebabs) he would rate authentic.) I also liked the romance, for reasons of personal temperament: the characters' attitudes were "I find this person extremely attractive, but as an adult I know it would be a terrible idea and probably I am just desperate for sex," as opposed to, "I am madly in love with this person but will not actually declare my love because I am mentally 13 and need to create 200 more pages of plot," which I found somewhat refreshing-- though the Hero and heroine do fall in love after about 48 hours, for all that.
