Cabled hat

Michigan winters can be cold, so this cozy cabled hat has two layers and a turned-up brim. It's also fully reversible!

Cabled hat

The pattern fits a small to medium adult head. The multiple layers make the fit tighter, so if in doubt, increase needle size or add a round of increases.

Yarn

Two skeins of superwash merino in worsted weight in contrasting colors. I used Lichen and Lace 4-ply in Soot and Urth Yarns Harvest Worsted in Indigo.

Equipment

Set of 5 double-pointed needles, size 7
16" circular needle, size 7
Cable needle

Gauge:

11 sts/2 inches on size 7 needles

Pattern

Cast on 8 stitches and divide on 4 double-pointed needles. Join and mark the beginning of the round. On the first round, increase 8 stitches by knitting into the front and back (k1fb) of each stitch. On the second round, (k1 k1fb) 8 times. On the third round, (k2 k1fb) 8 times; on the fourth round, (k3 k1fb) 8 times. Continue increasing 8 stitches each round in pattern until the sixth round, (k5 k1fb) 8 times. Knit one round plain.

On the next round, (k6 k1fb) 8 times. Knit another round plain. Continue increasing 8 stitches every other round in pattern until there are 26 stitches on each needle (104 stitches total). Change to circular needles.

Knit plain for 2 inches. Change to k4, p4 ribbing and continue for 6.5 inches. Change yarn color. Continue in k4, p4 ribbing for three rounds.

On the next round, begin the cable pattern: (Slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold stitches in back, k2, knit 2 stitches from cable needle, p4). Repeat till end of round. Knit three more rounds in k4, p4 ribbing.

Continue alternating the cable round and three rounds of ribbing until the section in the second yarn color measures 6.5 inches. Knit plain for 2 inches. Change to double-pointed needles.

On the next round, (k11, knit two together) 8 times. Knit the next round plain. On the following round, (k10, knit two together) 8 times. Continue decreasing 8 stitches in pattern every other round until there are 14 stitches on each needle, then decrease 8 stitches in pattern every round until only 8 stitches remain. Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches, and pull tight. Sew in ends. Stuff one half of the hat inside the other.
