(I guess that joke is more effective if you've watched the book work through an extensive list of permutations of human and alien pronouns, including binary pronouns, they/them from cultures where this is a standard choice, they/them from cultures where this is not a standard choice, neopronouns, rejection of all personal pronouns, human whose language doesn't gender pronouns, etc.)
