odds and ends

I read most of the second two books of Gene Wolfe's Long Sun series on the plane home. Somewhere in the middle I dozed and dreamed that someone was forcibly interrogating someone else using the fact that the someone else was some collection of finitely generated Z-modules, while the interrogator was a free Z-module and could therefore map onto his victim at any time.

The Long Sun books are beautiful but distant, and I react with incredulity every time the main character mentions that he's in love with the woman he's in love with. I think I am supposed to conclude that he's not-very-sub consciously sabotaging his priestly status; but I don't think I'm supposed to conclude that he is arbitrary and unfathomable.

What's with that stray 'e'? It's a masculine vocative. You must be talking to someone else.

actually, if you draw the sentence out it would be "I give thanks to you, Ursula" so really I am the nominative, you the dative singular. and thus if your name were a feminine strong noun... would have to have an e :P
so Urs, Urse, Urse, Urse, Ursa/e, Ursa/e, Ursa, Ursum :P
least, if we were doing old english :)

But Ursula is clearly Latin, and it's just as similar to "Ursula, I give thanks" which demands a vocative (namely Ursula, or Ursa if you want to drop the diminutive).

Ursule, on the other hand, is modern French and has the 'e' all the time :P

yeah yeah. i was exhausted when i wrote it and trying to cover for my extra e :P hmm... don't think OE has a vocative... not that we've learned anyway. I'll have to ask my teacher :)
