Every year my sister and I produce a calendar for my father's birthday. This year most of my contribution is medieval-art themed. I've scanned several of the pictures, but I haven't worried too much about color balance or size.

Nice! The block prints are nifty, and I've always liked that 11th C. Spanish style.

Thanks! Coloring the print gave it a really nice stained-glass effect. I'm going to have to try that again.

I'm just impressed that you did a linoleum block print on your own! I remember those things from High School Art... remember gouging myself a thousand times!

Yeah, we do. I'm in Portland this weekend (Arts Gathering and my dad's birthday) but we could talk next week or weekend sometime. (Bunstable project meeting is Wednesday; we're painting Gleann Abhann charters, and ladymuirgheal is teaching a class on coats.)

Your pouch has tassels now; it's just waiting for a cord. I've been looking for more scholarly stuff on the Arnegunde burial, but so far I've only found information on types of fabric.

I also have that book on Anglo-Saxon costume from the same time period, and a book out of the library that talks about wool & linen fabrics in contemporary finds. And I have some art books, but I think they are all either a century earlier or a century or two later.

I'm particularly interested in that open-front coat. I think it would look nice with your standard long undertunic, as well as the short ones and socks.

To the knee. (You can tell from the grave-find diagram here that the garters stopped at the knee; that's one of the least speculative parts of the project!)

My dad's party was last night, and we pulled out some of the old calendars, from five and ten and even fifteen years ago. It's fascinating to see how our art styles have changed (even since late high school: my technical skill hasn't improved much since I was 17 or 18, but it's obviously a different era!)
