I've noticed two basic attitudes toward posting to livejournal: that one really ought to do so more often, in order to keep in touch with one's friends, or alternatively that posting involves succumbing to the urge to tell one's tale the livelong day to an admiring bog & should be kept severely in check. I'm generally of the second opinion,1 but sometimes I waver. Thus, a meme:

Give me a topic-- geekish, political, religious, whatever-- and I'll post about it. Maybe a sentence, maybe a paragraph, maybe a multi-part post complete with pie charts... IF YOU'RE LUCKY.2

1 With regard to my own posts. Everyone else should post constantly.

2 Given the advanced degree in mathematics, one would think I could do better than pie charts. But mathematicians and for that matter theoretical physicists subscribe to the one-two-three-conjecture model of data analysis.

I see it as twofold:

keeps people up on whats going with my life, and I can keep up on whats going on with theirs. think of it as the perennial christmas letter.

also serves as a sounding board for ideas, reality checks, hopes, aspirations, personal goals and general brain dump

mostly I look at it as a personal journal. I figure if people dont want to read my ramblings (some of which are day to day, some of which are philosophical and thought provoking, if the responses are any indication) they dont have to. its all about me, baby :)

Likewise. I try to throw a little bit of everything in there if I can because it keeps me thinking of my life in a balanced manner.

for me, there are very few people on my friends list that I havent met in person. a couple folks are there because I read their journals and found them interesting/funny and friended them to keep up (some reciprocated and some didnt :)). a couple are friends of friends, which is cool :).

I'm really enjoying seeing the community do the organic thing and develop as it sees fit.

but in the end, its YOUR journal. its up to you to decide what the goals are, what you want out of it, and make it so :)

Oh we of the admiring bog do request...
multi-part pies.

1Of course, posts, books, articles, whatever, people, just WRITE MORE. I'm bored, and I must procrastinate. Er, at least that's how *I* feel about it.

I want more than one request wish. Let's see, talk about visual experience, how that works for you. Seeing you write a topic on humour strikes my fancy, and maybe a topic about sex and religion, or sex and cooking, or sex and college, or couple something at random that sounds interesting.

Man, I think it's the turnips.

I have a question! Or an essay topic. Because you don't mention this often now that you are a big impressive grad student in Seattle, but

1. Tell us something about West Linn!
1a. Tell us something mathematical about West Linn. Of the type of mathematics that I like. Like, you know, estimating how many cubic meters of water go over the falls a year.

I use my livejournal mostly to keep track of projects and as a reward when I make progress (I get to post about it and people go "ooo, pretty!" both of which help keep me going.) :)

Here's a topic for you: How does the general public perceive the SCA?

// do you find yourself imagining numbers "existing" in
// some sort of metaphysical or platonic sense?

// if so, does this upset you, or challenge any particular
// existential beliefs you have?

// if not, do you struggle with the idea of math being
// eternal, universal, or true?

// (sorry for the bullshit questions, but i am exhausted and in
// norway right now, so it's actually what i thought of)

The etymology of "enthusiast".

Or "Famous and Infamous Schoolmarms of History".

Or Ludwig Wittgenstein's career as a kindergarten teacher.
