This is a Latin scroll text, with translation, for Aldgytha of Ashwood's Pelican scroll. It's several kinds of anachronism, since it mixes formulas from Anglo-Saxon charters with heraldic language of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century vintage.


Ea quae secundum legem salubriter diffiniuntur , quamvis solus sermo sufficeret promulgare, tamen, pro incerta futurorum temporum conditione scriptis publicis et documentis sunt confirmanda.

Those things which are soundly defined according to law, although a single word may suffice to promulgate them, nevertheless, due to the uncertain condition of future times, should be confirmed by public writings and documents.

Quapropter ego Dirk rex et ego Chamayna regina egregiae opulentaeque Caidis ministram fidelem nostram qui Aldgytha of Ashwood appellatur electam in societatem Ordinis Pelicani decrevimus.

Therefore I, Dirk, and I, Chamayn, king and queen of rich and outstanding Caid, have decreed that our faithful servant who is called Aldgytha of Ashwood has been elected into the society of the Order of the Pelican.

Et ipsae arma hic depicta dedimus et concessimus per litteras nostras patentes.

And we have given and granted to her the arms depicted here through our letters patent.

Quorum quidem armorum campus oblique dextrorsus et sinistrorsus sectus est de rubeo et atro, cum quattuor rosis argenteis barbatis seminibusque.

And indeed the field of these arms is cut diagonally to right and left, of red and black, with four silver roses, barbed and with seeds.

Et ulterius, in incrementum honoris et dignitatis, concessimus ut praedicta Aldgytha super scutum portet cappellum manutenentiae rubeum flexum sursum cum plummis argenteis et guttis sanguineis super casside argenteo cum mantelulo atro duplicato argenteo.

And further, in increase of honor and dignity, we have decreed that the aforesaid Aldgytha may bear above the shield a red cap of maintenance, turned up with silver plumes and bloody drops, above a silver helmet, with black mantling, doubled silver.

Si quis uero minuerit hanc donationem, sciat se reum omni hora uitae suae et tenebrosum Tartarum non euadere.

Truly, if anyone should diminish this gift, may he know that, accused in every hour of his life, he will not escape the shadows of Tartarus.
