ursula: Gules, a bear passant sable (bear)

I spent most of the day at the Madrone Baronial Banquet, where I taught a class on imprese-- like heraldry, only cheesier-- to an illustrious audience (i.e., an audience which included Zenobia Naphtali, who is terribly illustrious in terms of SCA heraldry, but presumably not very well known in non-Society circles). In the process of teaching, I invented a new method for promoting civil discourse: require that all criticisms of others be embedded in symbolic embroidery. This method would either make everyone's surroundings charged yet beautiful, or daunt people so much that they'd have to think things through more sensibly. (Mary Queen of Scots preferred the former situation, of course.)

At dinner Z and [livejournal.com profile] ctseawa made initial noises about a kingdom-level teaching-heraldry position; I said, naturally, "Eek! I'm not doing anything till I pass my prelims!"

And finally, I won a hood! (A dagged blue wool hood with a liripipe, to be precise.) It was the first prize for a contest for a poem in praise of the Baroness; I wrote an imitation emblem, which is here, along with an extensive explanation of my various decisions, as well as what an emblem is. (If you're interested, I was imitating emblem poetry of the sort found here.)

Congratulations on your successfully-taught class and hood-winning poem! :)

For the non-SCA, is there something special about a hood, or was it just a prize that you liked?

now if we could all get annie to just enter things in which she could win garb... sigh... It is neat about the hood though - look forward to seeing it!
