Some of his audience will be aware of Afghanistan as a place where they or their family or friends were fighting the Taliban, but a one-sentence "we're fighting the Islamic terrorists" isn't going to give them useful context.
Also, from what (not a huge amount) I know about either Pablo Escobar or the Lord's Resistance Army, they weren't US clients in that sense, even if they were partly the result of US policies/activities.
