It is a scary time. So many people, most of whom had been doing important work, are abruptly unemployed because some capricious people who appear to lack compassion are in a position to say "get out". Many of these people would, any other year, probably easily get a new job that will appreciate their skills, but this is too many at once to absorb quickly into the private sector, which means many of them will suffer over and above the emotional trauma of the firing iself.
