I'm kinda hoping that steroids + getting the landlord to fix the tap & paint the bathroom will make me not cool again . . . But hey, in the meantime I can inhale too fast and make the spacer make a funny whistling sound!
I had (allergy-based) asthma the year I lived in ML basement, and it was bad enough that I almost passed out a few times. It went away as soon as I stopped living in ML basement.
Eek! Sounds like another mold thing (I avoided living in the basement, but several boxes of my stored stuff mildewed between freshman & sophomore year, when they took the gutters off to fix the roof). Do you have other allergies?
I have very mild seasonal allergies that first manifested my senior year in high school and show up most, but not all, years. These have the normal symptoms--mostly sneezing, with some nose-bleeds.
It wasn't until I moved out of ML basement and my sudden asthma disappeared that I knew it was allergy based (I'd had a cold in September that had turned into something bronchitis-like, which lasted about two weeks, and then the sound of the cough changed a bit and and it didn't go away until March--no one quite knew what it was except that its immediate triggers, and to some extent it's sound, ressembled those of asthma (it was mostly triggered by exertion and cold)).
In high school, under certain very air-conditioned situations (this was very rare and hard to reproduce), I would have the exact same reaction until I got out of the situation; this was rather embarassing, as I would suddenly start coughing until I vomitted for no apparent reason, usually in class, but once in someone's office when my parents were trying to negotiate with him about something. This is presumably the same mold-based allergy.
I also have a much stronger reaction than most people to chlorine--if I accidently swallow pool water I choke for about half an hour (whereas if I choke on regular water it usually lasts less than five minutes). This choking feeling feels very similar to how my ML and air conditioning allergies felt (which is, in fact, quite distinct from how choking on food or regular water feels), and has occasionally led to coughing fits that made me vomit or almost faint. Also, this was once triggered by spending six hours at a water park and just breathing chlorine all day, which I've never really heard of happening to anyone else.
