suggested I ask you about medieval/Renaissance scholar's clothing. I'm mostly interested in the 16th century, but I would greatly appreciate any resources you could suggest.

See if you can get your hands on a copy of:
W.N. Hargreaves-Mawdsley,
A History of Academical Dress in Europe Until the End of the Eighteenth Century
. Westport: Greenwood Press, 1963.
You can find a good chunk of it summarized in the pages starting here:
http://www.geocities.com/noelcox/Early_Academical_Dress.htm
and I could give you a fifteenth-century summary, but Hargreaves-Mawdsley is the obvious starting point.

No problem-- I find it hard to believe "academical" is a word, myself.

I'm not totally convinced by the argument that it needs to be a noun rather than an adjective.
